I was motivated by an interest in improving my Russian and in Central Asia, especially Kazakhstan. My university has a relationship with Narxoz, and one of my advisors recommended this program. It sounded like a great opportunity to improve my Russian and visit a country I hadn’t been to before. It was a really great choice - I learned a ton about Kazakhstan, its history, Almaty, and I improved my Russian skills. The summer school has reinforced my interest in Central Asia and Kazakhstan. I’m fascinated by the people and history. Since I chose Russian as my foreign language, I’m glad I could communicate with people, and it’s influenced me to return to Kazakhstan someday, maybe to start learning Kazakh. The level of attention here is really special. I’ve done other summer language programs, but this one was much more involved, with lots of activities.

I think Russian is a very interesting language, and I thought why not learn it, get outside my comfort zone. It’s another string to my bow, it allows me to meet new people, and I’ve had a memorable experience here in Almaty. I’ve met a lot of people, had many interactions with locals, and it’s nothing like the Borat movie - I highly recommend checking out Almaty. This experience has opened up a new world and new acquaintances. Learning Russian is a great skill, and it will enable me to communicate with a larger audience through my music and social media. Join the summer school next year - explore Almaty, the culture, the food, and the language. I’ve done it, and I’m quite impressed with myself.
