On October 12, 2024, the PRE-COP29 conference took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The goal of the event was to coordinate joint actions in the lead-up to and during the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UNFCCC, which will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, as well as to develop practical recommendations for further actions.
The main themes of the panel discussions with invited experts included current challenges and barriers in the fight against climate change, the engagement of children and youth in the climate agenda, the relevance of educational programs, the level of research opportunities, and the availability of green skills for children and youth in the Central Asian and Eurasian regions.
After identifying key challenges and obstacles, the experts also shared their experiences and proposals for overcoming them. These recommendations will serve as a valuable source of information and a tool to strengthen the actions of youth, educational institutions, and civil society in promoting joint efforts to combat climate change. A document with the final recommendations will be presented shortly. These recommendations will be sent to a wide range of stakeholders and presented at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC.
The conference was organized in partnership with Narxoz University, the global student network PRME (an initiative of the UN Global Compact), the Regional Youth Conference of Central Asian Countries and Afghanistan, invited experts, and the youth organization Climate for Us.
