Creative Spark

In 2018, Narxoz University in partnership with Coventry University Social Enterprise (CUSE) became a grant holder of Creative Spark: Higher Education Enterprise Programme funded by the British Council.

Creative Spark is a five year initiative to support international university and institutional partnerships to develop enterprise skills and creative economy across seven countries in Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan), South Caucasus (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia) and Ukraine through UK support.

In two years Narxoz and CUSE have been working in several directions to develop creative entrepreneurship in Almaty:

Awareness raising

In the framework of the Programme we have carried our series of events to promote creative entrepreneurship among adolescent and young people in Almaty - Creative Almaty Forum and Creative Almaty Days. Activities have been shared on YouTube and other social media.

Curriculum development

Partnership

We have built strong connections with the Almaty's Mayor's Office and its Department of Culture and Archives. In February 2020, we became a member of Almaty City's Creative Industries Council. Additionally, as a member of the British Chamber of Commerce in Kazakhstan we are also active members of its Creative Economy Committee.

Research

In partnership with British Council, Narxoz researchers have co-authored the first Mapping of Creative Economy in Kazakhstan. Co-authors of this report have formed the Creative Economy Center with the university to support and develop creative industries in Kazakhstan and Central Asia through research, education and action.

Creative Spark English Club

From 2019-2020, Narxoz University has been chosen to pilot a Creative Spark English Club – an extracurricular activity to enhance speaking skills among students. 17 Narxoz students successfully participated in the club from January to May 2020. Starting September 2020, the Club will continue its work within the Narxoz University Linguistics Center.
