We are pleased to announce that the AsianSIL Intersessional Conference 2024 will be co-hosted by Narxoz University and KIMEP University (Almaty, Kazakhstan) on 24-25 May 2024. The broad theme of the Conference is Asia and International Law: Historical Legacy and Progressive Development. The Conference will be preceded by an online Junior Scholar Workshop on 23 May 2024. We look forward to welcoming you at the AsianSIL Conference and / or the Workshop.
OBJECTIVE
The AsianSIL Intersessional Conference 2024 will be a forum to enable the exchange of ideas between international law scholars and practitioners. The Conference welcomes not only Asian scholars but also international legal scholars who are interested in issues pertaining to Asia. The Conference also seeks to contribute to the international law scholarship through the publication of selected papers. The working language of the Intersessional Conference and the Junior Scholar Workshop will be English.

The AsianSIL Intersessional Conference 2024 welcomes submissions on all topics of international law, including:

1. Historical Development of International Law and Modern Trends in Asia
2. International Legal Aspects of the Belt and Road Initiative
3. International Law and Democratic Development in Asia
4. Human Rights and Sustainability in the Asian Region
5. Dispute Settlement in International Law and Recent Developments in Asia
6. Asian Values and Approaches to Multilateral Cooperation in Asia
7. The Role of International Organizations in Growing Asia
8. Challenges of International Law and Its Effectiveness
9. Central Asia and Development of International Law
10. Environmental Issues of Cooperation between Asian States
11. The Common Heritage and the Future of Resources

14. Private International Law
15. Intellectual Property Law
16. International Humanitarian Law
17. Artificial Intelligence, Cyberspace, and International Law

PANELS & SESSIONS
PLENARY SESSIONS
There will be two plenary sessions: “Central Asia and International Law”, and “Asia and the Future of International Law”.

PARALLEL PANEL DISCUSSIONS
There will be up to four papers per panel to give presenters and discussants adequate time for a fruitful engagement.
SELECTION CRITERIA FOR PAPERS
The papers will be selected on a competitive basis. The selection will be done jointly by the host institutions and the AsianSIL. The selection criteria will be as follows:

1. Quality of the abstract
2. A focus on Asia
3. Relevance to the broad theme
4. Geographical diversity of presenters
5. Balance between senior and junior presenters
6. Participants must be Professors or Teachers at a university, or Ph.D. holders or Ph.D. candidates

Submissions from legal practitioners who pursue academic research are also welcomed.

INFORMATION ON SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
1. The deadline for submission of individual abstracts is 22 December 2023. Abstracts received after the submission deadline may be declined.
2. Participants will be notified on the status of their submission in February 2024 via email, hence it is important that you provide a valid email address with each abstract submission.
3. Selection will be made on a competitive basis.
4. Upon acceptance of abstracts, full papers must be submitted by 30 April 2024.
5. The organizers reserve the right to make changes to the panel allocation.

1. For individual papers/co-author(s), please submit abstracts by email to asiansil2024@narxoz.kz, and provide in the attached files (MS Word or PDF) the following information:
2. Please indicate clearly whether you are applying for the Junior Scholar Workshop or the Intersessional AsianSIL Conference 2024.

4. Proposed panel (see above under “Parallel Panel Discussion”)
5. Abstract: Description of paper should be no more than 300 words (inclusive of footnotes if any). Please adhere strictly to this requirement.
6. Speaker’s Bio: Brief description of professional status, education background and experience in no more than 250 words. Please do not submit your CVs and adhere strictly to this requirement.

The co-hosts will bear the costs of the conference with the recuperation of costs partially through registration fees.

THE JUNIOR SCHOLAR WORKSHOP
(in collaboration with the TRILA Programme of Centre for International Law, National University of Singapore)

There will be a Junior Scholar Workshop that will be held online on 23rd May 2024.

This Workshop is aimed at providing selected junior scholars a forum to present their current research projects (draft articles), and receive comments from a panel of senior scholars. Any enquiries about the JSW may be addressed to the TRILA Team at ciltrila@gmail.com
